Parent/Guardian Notice
New Idaho Requirement: Daily Moment of Silence
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to make you aware of a new Idaho law that affects all public schools across the state. Beginning July 1, 2026, Idaho law requires public schools to observe a 60-second moment of silence at or near the beginning of each school day.
In accordance with Idaho Code § 33-1639, Moment of Silence in Public Schools, Basin School District will incorporate this one-minute period of silence into the daily morning routine at each of our schools.
During the moment of silence, students may sit quietly or engage in any silent activity as long as the activity does not distract or interfere with other students. Students are expected to respect the moment of silence and the rights of others participating. Disruption of the minute of silence may result in disciplinary action.
The law also encourages parents and guardians to provide their children with direction regarding how they may use this time for silent reflection or other appropriate silent activity.
Please understand that this is a statewide requirement for all Idaho public schools. We are providing this notice so families are aware of the change and can discuss it with their children as we begin the new school year.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our students and schools.
Sincerely,
Patricia Kelly
Superintendent
Basin School District
